India’s Information and Broadcasting Ministry on Tuesday announced that it had blocked 20 YouTube channels and two websites for spreading “anti-India propaganda”.

Two orders were issued by the ministry on Monday – one asking YouTube to block the 20 channels and other to block the websites. This marked the first time India invoked emergency powers under the newly notified changes in the contentious IT Act.

According to the ministry’s statement, the YouTube channels and websites can be traced back to Pakistan, from where an alleged disinformation network is being operated.

The ministry’s statement was quoted by news agency PTI as saying that the channels were used to spread “divisive content in a coordinated manner on topics like Kashmir, Indian army, minority communities in India, Ram Mandir, General Bipin Rawat etc.”

The ministry also claims that the anti-India content was hosted by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). The total subscriber base of these channels stood at over 3.5 million, with an approximate total viewership of 500 million.
