DURHAM – The Duke softball program has been named to two more preseason polls, as the Blue Devils were named the No. 15 team in the country according to Softball America and the No. 18 team in the nation in the ESPN/USA Softball preseason poll.
The Blue Devils are one of four ACC teams named in both polls, joining Clemson, Florida State and Virginia Tech. Duke was also named the No. 13 team in the nation by D1 Softball on Jan. 18.
The Blue Devils made serious strides in Softball America’s poll, moving up from the final ranking of 21st last season. The program checks in at No. 18 in ESPN/USA Softball’s poll after finishing in the same spot last year. It’s the first time the Blue Devils have been ranked in either preseason poll in program history.
Head Coach Marissa Young‘s squad returns 17 members from last season’s ACC Championship team, headlined by three players ranked in the nation’s top-100 by Extra Innings Softball and Softball America – graduate student Peyton St. George, senior Deja Davis and senior Shelby Walters. Duke is coming off a record breaking 2021 season, winning 44 games and achieving several program firsts.
The Blue Devils will open the 2022 season on Feb. 11, with games against California Baptist and Oklahoma State at 11 a.m., and 1:30 p.m. ET, as part of the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. Oklahoma State checks in as the No. 2 and No. 4 team in the nation in Softball America and ESPN/USA Softball, respectively, according to the same polls.
