Robert Califf, a former Food and Drug Administration commissioner, is the Biden administration’s choice to once again head the agency, as it plays a critical role in efforts to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

President Biden announced the nomination on Friday. The FDA, which has been clearing the use of Covid-19 vaccines, boosters and drugs, has been operating without a permanent leader since Mr. Biden took office.

“Dr. Robert Califf is one of the most experienced clinical trialists in the country, and has the experience and expertise to lead the Food and Drug Administration during a critical time in our nation’s fight to put an end to the coronavirus pandemic,” Mr. Biden said. “As the FDA considers many consequential decisions around vaccine approvals and more, it is mission-critical that we have a steady, independent hand to guide the FDA.”

The president urged the Senate to swiftly confirm Dr. Califf, citing the broad bipartisan support he received when nominated for the same role in 2016.
